FESTIVALS

Restoring the films is only the beginning. The next step is bringing them back to audiences around the world.

The thirteen films of The Whapung Collection are being restored not simply for preservation, but with the ambition of returning these long-unavailable works to the big screen.

As the 4K restoration programme progresses, Karmax-910 is preparing the international circulation of the collection, with the aim of presenting the films at festivals, cinematheques and repertory venues around the world.

BACK ON THE BIG SCREEN

For decades, most of these films have remained largely inaccessible outside South Korea. Their restoration creates an opportunity for international audiences to discover a little-known body of work produced between 1979 and 1985 by one of the major figures connecting the histories of Korean and Hong Kong cinema.

The collection encompasses a wide range of genres and periods of Korean popular cinema, offering numerous possibilities for festival programming — whether through individual screenings, thematic programmes, retrospectives devoted to Chung Chang-wha, or presentations exploring the historical connections between Korean and Hong Kong cinema.

AN INTERNATIONAL REDISCOVERY

The international festival strategy for The Whapung Collection is deliberately broad. The restored films are intended to circulate across Asia, Europe, North America and other territories worldwide, reaching both specialist audiences and viewers discovering Chung Chang-wha’s work for the first time.

Festival screenings will form an essential part of this rediscovery, allowing the films to be presented in their historical context and, whenever possible, accompanied by introductions, discussions and other editorial material exploring their production and restoration.

The project is conceived not simply as the circulation of thirteen individual titles, but as an opportunity to reassess an overlooked chapter in the history of Korean cinema.
