RIGHTS & BOOKINGS
The Whapung Collection is available for international distribution, festival programming, theatrical screenings, home video, television, VOD and special presentations.
Karmax-910 controls the worldwide rights across all media to the thirteen films in The Whapung Collection.
As the 4K restoration programme progresses, the films are being prepared for a new international life — individually, as curated selections, or as part of larger programmes devoted to Chung Chang-wha, Whapung and Korean cinema of the late 1970s and 1980s.
Professional enquiries are welcome from distributors, festivals, cinematheques, museums, repertory cinemas, home-video labels, broadcasters, streaming platforms and cultural institutions worldwide.
DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS
Distribution and licensing opportunities for the thirteen films may be discussed across a wide range of media and territories.
• Theatrical distribution
• Home video — Blu-ray / UHD
• VOD and streaming
• Television and broadcast
• Festival screenings
• Cinematheque and repertory screenings
• Institutional and cultural presentations
• Special events and retrospective programmes
Licensing can be discussed for individual films, selections of titles or larger packages from The Whapung Collection, depending on the territory and intended form of exploitation.
FESTIVALS & CINEMATHEQUES
The international rediscovery of the Whapung films is one of the principal objectives of the restoration project.
Enquiries are welcome from film festivals, cinematheques, museums, film archives, universities and repertory venues interested in presenting one or more restored titles.
The films can be considered individually or within programmes exploring subjects such as Chung Chang-wha’s career, Korean popular cinema, Korean action cinema, the Korean film industry of the period, or the historical connections between Korean and Hong Kong cinema.
Larger Chung Chang-wha or Whapung retrospectives can also be discussed.
SPECIAL SCREENINGS & EVENTS
The Whapung Collection can also be presented through special screenings accompanied by historical and editorial context.
Depending on the event and location, presentations may include introductions, Q&As, lectures, discussions or contextual programmes devoted to Chung Chang-wha, the history of Whapung, the restoration process and the relationship between Korean and Hong Kong cinema.
These events can be developed in collaboration with festivals, cinematheques, cultural institutions, universities and other organisations wishing to introduce the films within a broader historical context.
PROGRAMMING & PARTNERSHIPS
Because The Whapung Collection encompasses thirteen films across different genres, the project offers considerable flexibility for programmers and distribution partners.
Enquiries may concern a single title, several films, a thematic programme, a Chung Chang-wha retrospective or a broader presentation of the Whapung catalogue.
As restoration progresses, professional viewing materials and information concerning the available masters can be supplied to qualified partners on request.
PROJECT COORDINATION
The Whapung Collection is coordinated for Karmax-910 by Frédéric Ambroisine, filmmaker, film historian and Asian cinema specialist.
His role encompasses the project’s editorial and historical development, restoration follow-up, documentation, international presentation and coordination with festivals, cinematheques, distributors, home-video labels and other professional partners.
Ambroisine’s involvement with Chung Chang-wha’s work extends back more than two decades. He interviewed the filmmaker extensively in the early 2000s for the French DVD edition of King Boxer released by Wild Side, with material from his work with Chung subsequently appearing in Arrow Video’s Shawscope Volume One.
The Whapung project continues this long-term work by focusing on a much less internationally known chapter of Chung Chang-wha’s career: the films he produced after returning to South Korea and establishing Whapung.
